World's highest marathon: Nepalese Phurba Tamang wins 10th Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon
A racer runs in the 10th edition of the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon at Gorakshep, some 5,100 meters above sea level, in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district Tuesday. Nepalese athlete Phurba Tamang, 24, won the 42.2-km marathon for the third time, completing the race in 3 hours, 41 minutes and 31 seconds. Dubbed the "world’s highest marathon," the event is run May 29 each year to commemorate the first successful ascent of the peak, by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.
